Nigeria on Sunday marked the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, paying tribute to military personnel for their sacrifices in safeguarding the nation’s unity, peace, and territorial integrity.

The nationwide observance featured interdenominational church services and activities to honour serving officers, veterans, and fallen heroes, including those who lost their lives during the civil war, internal security operations, and international peacekeeping missions.

Speaking at a church service in Abuja, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the sacrifices of military personnel as the foundation of Nigeria’s stability and progress.

Represented by the Deputy Chief Whip, Peter Nwebonyi, he reaffirmed the Federal Government and National Assembly’s commitment to fostering a safe and peaceful environment for Nigerians.

In Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji, represented by Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, lauded the Armed Forces for their resilience in confronting insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping.

He highlighted the costs borne by service members, noting that many have suffered life-altering injuries or lost their lives in the line of duty.

“Armed Forces Remembrance Day offers a moment of reflection. The peace and freedom we enjoy today were purchased with sweat, blood and supreme sacrifice,” Oyebanji said, emphasising the importance of honouring the courage and patriotism of Nigeria’s military.

The annual commemoration serves as a reminder of the sacrifices that underpin national security and reinforces ongoing commitments to support troops and their families.
