The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed calls for his removal, insisting that only President Bola Tinubu has the authority to sack him.

Wike spoke on Sunday during a thank you visit to Obio Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he said political power is driven by strength and strategic action, not sentiment.

He described Obio Akpor as a decisive force in Rivers politics, citing its voting strength as key to determining political outcomes in the state.

The former Rivers governor, who is touring the state’s 23 local government areas, said the visits were to appreciate supporters from the 2023 elections and mobilise backing for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 polls.

He criticised what he called sideline commentators, arguing that areas with weak voter numbers cannot challenge politically strong local governments.

Wike said Obio Akpor would continue to deploy its votes to assert its relevance.

Responding to calls for his removal as FCT minister, Wike said such decisions rest solely with the President, adding that his record in office speaks for itself.

Earlier, Obio Akpor Council Chairman, Gift Worlu, described Wike as a loyal and proven leader and pledged the council’s support for President Tinubu in 2027.

Rivers Assembly Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, also reaffirmed lawmakers’ backing for Wike and Tinubu, urging the minister to ignore critics.

The visit comes amid rising political tension in Rivers State following the commencement of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, by the state House of Assembly over allegations of gross misconduct.
