The Nigerian Army has warned the public to beware of fake social media accounts allegedly operated in the name of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.
The warning was issued on Friday in a statement by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, and published on the Army’s official X handle.
According to the statement, fraudsters have increasingly created and operated fake online accounts to impersonate the Chief of Army Staff for criminal and deceptive purposes.
The Army clarified that the Chief of Army Staff does not own or operate any official social media account on any platform, stressing that any account claiming to represent him is fake and should be ignored.
Members of the public were advised to remain vigilant, as such accounts are often used to defraud unsuspecting individuals, solicit money, or spread false information.
The Army cautioned Nigerians against engaging with or sharing content from such accounts, noting that investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute those behind the scams.
It reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity in line with the Constitution.
