Renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused Euracare Hospital, Lagos, of medical negligence, alleging that lapses in care led to the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi.
In a personal statement circulated among family and friends, Adichie said the incident occurred on January 6, describing the loss as devastating. She alleged that her son became unresponsive after being sedated at Euracare for an MRI and central line insertion, ahead of a planned medical evacuation to the United States.
According to her account, doctors informed her that the anaesthesiologist administered an excessive dose of propofol. Although the child was reportedly resuscitated, he was placed on a ventilator, admitted to intensive care, later suffered seizures and cardiac arrest, and died hours later.
Adichie alleged that her son was not properly monitored after sedation and accused the anaesthesiologist of violating basic medical protocols, describing the actions as “criminally negligent.” She added that her son had been sick but stable and was taken to the hospital only for routine procedures.
Calling for accountability, Adichie said the tragedy should not be allowed to happen to another child.
