The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected impeachment proceedings initiated by the State House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, warning that the move could destabilise the state.
The party’s reaction followed the formal commencement of impeachment proceedings over alleged gross misconduct. During plenary, Speaker Martins Amaewhule reportedly accused the governor of actions amounting to gross misconduct.
In a statement on Thursday, signed by the APC spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the party described the impeachment move as untenable, insisting it would not remain silent while political disputes threaten an APC-led government.
While acknowledging the constitutional role of the legislature, the APC said it strongly opposed the impeachment process, noting that the issues raised, including budgetary concerns, did not justify such drastic action.
The party explained that the ₦1.485 trillion budget approved in 2025 remains valid until August 2026 and that the constitution allows a governor a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year without mandating a supplementary budget.
The APC urged members of the House of Assembly, particularly its lawmakers, to resist external pressures and called for an immediate halt to the impeachment process in the interest of stability and democratic governance in Rivers State.
