A nurse with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja, Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumezie, has been killed by suspected “one chance” criminals after closing from a late duty, sparking outrage over worsening insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory.
Chinemerem was attacked while returning home after work on Saturday. The incident has drawn condemnation from the Elegant Nurses Forum, which described the killing as a painful and unacceptable loss.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide, the forum said the nurse was a dedicated health worker who cared for others but was failed by a system that could not guarantee her safety. It added that the killing reflects a broader pattern of insecurity faced by workers, particularly health professionals who work night shifts and commute through unsafe routes.
The group criticised what it described as the silence of labour unions amid rising attacks on workers, warning that such inaction amounts to complicity.
The forum demanded a thorough investigation into the murder and the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. It also called for government funded staff shuttle services for hospitals, improved security around health facilities and major routes, and formal recognition of health workers as high risk essential workers with specific safety protections.
The forum said it stands in solidarity with the nurse’s family and colleagues, insisting that urgent action is needed to prevent further loss of lives.
