Supporters of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, have warned that those behind his prosecution will face a reckoning, according to his younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu.
Prince Emmanuel made the remarks amid renewed controversy over Kanu’s life sentence on terrorism-related charges handed down by the Federal High Court in Abuja. The court convicted Kanu for issuing “sit-at-home” orders and other acts it linked to terrorism.
The conviction has continued to draw criticism from Kanu’s family and some civil rights advocates, who argue that the trial was flawed and politically motivated. They also claim the law under which he was convicted had been repealed and may be overturned on appeal.
Kanu has since rejected the judgment and filed appeals against the conviction. His supporters have also raised concerns over his treatment in custody, including his transfer to a correctional facility in Sokoto.
As of the time of filing this report, government officials had not responded to the latest remarks, and there was no indication of any immediate action regarding the prosecution.
