Candidates of the Labour Party (LP) for the February 21, 2026 Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections on Monday protested at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja over the non upload of their names.
The protesters accused INEC of failing to comply with a subsisting court order directing the commission to publish the names and particulars of Labour Party candidates for the polls scheduled across the six area councils.
An FCT High Court on December 29, 2025 ordered INEC to upload the candidates’ details within 48 hours. More than one week after the ruling, the commission is yet to comply.
Confirming the protest, the party’s spokesman, Obiora Ifoh, said party members later briefed the National Chairman, Julius Abure, at the party’s national secretariat.
Abure warned that the continued delay could undermine the Labour Party’s participation in the election, insisting that INEC must obey the court order.
Ifoh described INEC’s action as contempt of court and vowed that the party would pursue all lawful means to ensure compliance.
