The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has faulted what it described as misleading statements by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the FCT Public Health Department over the collection of levies and regulation of business premises within the council.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 5, 2026, and signed by Kingsley Madaki, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs to the AMAC Chairman, Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, the council warned against what it called a distortion of facts.
AMAC stressed that the FCT Public Health Department is a service-oriented body and not a revenue-generating agency, insisting that the collection of certain levies and regulation of business premises fall within the constitutional responsibilities of area councils.
The council also expressed concern over a recent stakeholders’ meeting convened by the FCTA, describing it as an attempt to undermine the constitutional functions of local governments.
Citing the 1999 Constitution, as amended, AMAC urged the FCTA and its departments to respect the statutory roles of the third tier of government and called for cooperation to avoid overlap of functions.
