Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has returned to the United Kingdom following the fatal car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele.
The accident occurred on Monday, December 29, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Makun, as Joshua was travelling to Sagamu for New Year celebrations.
Joshua sustained minor injuries and was discharged from hospital on New Year’s Eve.
According to the BBC, Joshua flew back to the UK ahead of the burial of the victims.
Sky Sports reported that funeral prayers for Ghami and Ayodele will be held on Sunday at the London Central Mosque.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has charged the driver involved in the crash, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, with causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a licence.
He was granted bail in the sum of N5 million, while the case was adjourned until January 20.
Kayode’s son, Ifeoluwa Adeniyi, has claimed the crash was caused by brake failure and an illegally parked truck.
Kayode’s lawyer, Olalekan Abiodun, also disclosed that Joshua survived the crash after changing seats shortly before the impact.
The incident has continued to draw attention as the victims are laid to rest in London.
