Nigeria’s political community is mourning the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who passed away on Wednesday at a medical facility in India. He was 52.
Akwashiki, from Angba Iggah in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District. He was first elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2023 on the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform. Before joining the Senate, he served in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly as Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin described Akwashiki as an outstanding parliamentarian committed to development and the welfare of Nasarawa North residents. “His patriotism and dedication to public service were exemplary,” Jibrin said, extending condolences to the family and people of the state.
The SDP also expressed grief, noting Akwashiki’s leadership as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, Vice Chairman of Media and Public Affairs, and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Air Force. The party described him as a grassroots politician whose influence shaped the socio-political landscape of Nasarawa North and the wider state.
Tributes have poured in across party lines, highlighting Akwashiki’s legacy as a committed legislator and respected public servant. The SDP prayed for his soul’s repose and strength for his family.
