In the face of escalating kidnappings, terrorism, and banditry in Nigeria, Sant’Egidio has urged Nigerians and global leaders to prioritize peace, emphasizing that development is impossible without security and coexistence.

The call was made on Thursday in Abuja during the group’s “Daring Peace” event, held to mark the World Day of Peace, celebrated every January 1.

Prince Henry Ezike, National Responsible of Sant’Egidio in Nigeria, said the organization prayed for peace according to various religious traditions, carrying in their hearts the struggles of communities affected by violence. “Now is the time to be bold and dare to carve out paths to peace.

“Millions of children, women, men, and the elderly are suffering from the consequences of terrorism and cannot wait for change,” he said.

Ezike also appealed to Nigerian leaders to “change the evil narrative that diminishes the value of human life” and called on global leaders to adopt a new paradigm in fostering peace.

Mr Emmanuel Nkanta, Coordinator of Youth for Peace, noted that the Peace Walk promoted unity and the ideals of peace both globally and within Nigeria.

“Peace is not just theoretical; it is a practical experience and a way of life. Starting the year on a peace-building note is vital,” he said.

Nkanta added, “We are first and foremost humans before any political, religious, or ethnic affiliation. Together, we can build a more peaceful and humane world.”

The event highlighted the urgent need for collective action to address insecurity and promote harmony in Nigeria.
