Suspected bandits on Wednesday night attacked a police station in Ipele, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, throwing the community into panic.

The incident occurred around 10 pm, as residents, including Christians preparing for crossover services, were getting set to attend church.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers, numbering about 20, stormed the community, firing sporadically and forcing residents and police officers to flee for safety.

It was gathered that the assailants set the police divisional station ablaze during the attack.

An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the assault as terrifying, saying many residents escaped into nearby bushes to avoid being hit by stray bullets.

Confirming the incident, Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Abayomi, said the attack occurred but noted that details were still sketchy.

“Yes, it happened, but we will release full details tomorrow,” Abayomi said.

Meanwhile, security operatives have reportedly been deployed to the area to restore calm.
