The Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), has ordered the immediate withdrawal of its personnel from produce inspection points across the state amid concerns over the implementation of new tax laws set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
In an official notice issued on Wednesday, BIRS said the decision was taken due to operational safety concerns and uncertainties surrounding enforcement procedures under the transitioning tax regime.
Affected locations include inspection points along major highways and border routes.
The move has raised concerns among farmers, traders, and transporters who depend on the checkpoints for certification and clearance of agricultural produce. Stakeholders fear the withdrawal could disrupt trade activities, reduce state revenue, and encourage unregulated movement of goods.
The development comes as debates continue nationwide over the new tax reforms, despite federal authorities insisting the laws will commence as scheduled.
As of the time of filing this report, BIRS and the Benue State Ministry of Agriculture had yet to issue further clarification on interim arrangements for produce inspection.
