Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following his official defection to the party.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Atiku described Obi’s move as a significant development in Nigeria’s opposition politics, expressing optimism about building a strong and credible alternative to the ruling party.

“Today marks a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country with the official declaration of my brother and associate, @PeterObi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” Atiku wrote.

He added that Obi’s entry would strengthen cooperation among opposition forces and help foster a virile opposition capable of forming a government that delivers prosperity and peace to Nigerians.

Atiku also called on other opposition leaders to join the coalition, urging patriots across the country to align with the ADC-led movement.

Earlier on Tuesday, Obi announced his defection to the ADC in Enugu, describing the move as part of a broader plan to rescue and transform Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election.

“We are ending this year with hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” Obi said.

He also pledged that the opposition would resist electoral malpractice through lawful means and called for unity among opposition leaders under a common platform.
