The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has confirmed that 18 persons were killed in a multiple auto crash on Tuesday in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The accident, which involved two Volkswagen cars and a tipper truck, occurred around 12:15 p.m. at Danmasara village along the Dutse-Kwanar Huguma road.

In a statement issued in Dutse, the state FRSC spokesperson, Corps Route Commander Yahaya Ibrahim, attributed the crash to excessive speeding, tyre burst and loss of control.

He said 20 people were involved in the accident, adding that 18 victims, including children, lost their lives, while the tipper driver and his assistant sustained injuries.

According to him, the injured persons and the bodies of the deceased were evacuated to Dutse General Hospital by FRSC rescue teams.

Ibrahim warned motorists against speeding and poor vehicle maintenance, stressing that tyre bursts remain a major cause of fatal road crashes in the country.

The incident comes barely days after another fatal accident in Jigawa, in which 11 people died and 12 others were injured in a lone crash on the Ringim-Sankara-Beguwa road on December 25, also blamed on excessive speeding and tyre burst.
