Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is set to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), according to aides and party sources.
Sources said the governor has concluded consultations with key stakeholders, including members of the state House of Assembly, local government chairmen and some federal lawmakers, and is determined to leave the NNPP with or without the consent of his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
In a viral video on Sunday, Yusuf’s Director of Protocol, Abdullahi Ibrahim Rogo, said leaders and supporters in Rogo Local Government Area had resolved to follow the governor to the APC.
He added that they believed the move was in the best interest of Kano State and the country.
Similarly, the Director-General, Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, publicly backed the decision of stakeholders in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area to align with the governor’s planned defection.
Sources said Governor Yusuf is expected to formally announce his move to the APC in the first week of January.
Meanwhile, Kwankwaso was reported to have informed Kano lawmakers that the governor was leaving the NNPP, adding that anyone willing to follow him was free to do so, though he expressed reservations about the reasons for the defection.
