An explosion suspected to have been caused by Boko Haram insurgents has rocked a Juma’at Mosque in Gamboru Ward, near the Customs area of Maiduguri, Borno State capital.
The blast occurred around 6:10 p.m. on Wednesday while worshippers were observing the Maghrib prayer.
Although official casualty figures were yet to be confirmed, residents told Channels Television that several worshippers were feared killed or injured in the incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Nahum Daso, said he could not immediately confirm the blast but was heading to the scene for assessment.
The incident has heightened fear among residents, particularly as communities prepare for the 2025 Christmas celebrations.
Security operatives have since cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties and enable preliminary investigations.
