The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, on Monday night hosted Afrobeats star Asake and his mother at the ancient palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State, describing the visit as a symbolic homecoming.

The visit was revealed in a video shared by the monarch on his official X handle late Monday, showing the singer in the company of palace chiefs and other dignitaries within the historic palace grounds in Ile-Ife.

In a message accompanying the video, Oba Ogunwusi referred to the artiste as his son and celebrated his rise on the global music stage, noting that Ile-Ife played a significant role in shaping Asake’s early life.

“Today fills my heart with deep joy as I welcome my son, Asake, back home to Ile-Ife. This sacred land is where he spent many of his formative years, moulded by hard work, discipline, and quiet determination. To return home after such a journey is a blessing, and I receive him with pride and open arms,” the monarch wrote.

During the visit, which took place on Monday at the Ooni’s palace, Asake performed his hit song Lonely at the Top before the traditional ruler and other dignitaries present. The Ooni, in turn, presented the singer with a piece of artwork from his personal collection as a mark of honour.

Oba Ogunwusi also paid tribute to Asake’s mother, describing her as a steadfast pillar whose love, sacrifices and resilience contributed significantly to the artiste’s success.

The monarch further acknowledged the role of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in nurturing the singer, expressing gratitude to the institution and Professor Toyin Ogundeji for their contributions to Asake’s development into an international music star.

“I also express my sincere appreciation to Professor Toyin Ogundeji and Obafemi Awolowo University for nurturing one of the greatest musical icons of our time, a cultural ambassador who has carried Yoruba heritage onto the global stage,” the Ooni said.

Asake’s visit to the palace comes shortly after his return to Nigeria following about two years abroad. The singer has also confirmed that he has relocated to Los Angeles, United States, even as he continues to maintain strong ties with his roots in Ile-Ife.
