The Federal Government has announced plans to formalise Nigeria’s vehicle recycling sector from 2026, with projections of generating over N150 billion annually.
The initiative, to be implemented by the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), will introduce an End-of-Life Vehicle programme requiring vehicle owners to pay a recycling fee at registration to fund safe disposal and recycling, the council’s Director-General, Joseph Osanipin, said on Sunday.
Osanipin said the policy would turn abandoned and end-of-life vehicles into economic assets, noting that over 85 per cent of vehicle components are reusable or recyclable.
He added that the scheme could create thousands of jobs across dismantling, refurbishing and parts resale.
He also disclosed that from 2026, used vehicles imported into Nigeria would require mandatory pre-export certification to curb the influx of unroadworthy cars, with exporters bearing the cost.
Osanipin said the reforms align with efforts to promote electric vehicles and compressed natural gas, while plans are underway to back the National Automotive Industry Development Plan with legislation.
