Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has said the party will closely monitor the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ahead of the 2027 general election, stressing that the commission’s conduct is critical to Nigeria’s democracy.
Kwankwaso spoke on Saturday in Abuja at the NNPP national convention, shortly after the swearing-in of newly re-elected party executives, in the presence of INEC officials, party leaders and delegates.
“We are keeping our eyes on INEC because its job can make or mar democracy in this country,” he said, while congratulating the commission on the appointment of its new national chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan.
He assured party members that the NNPP leadership would continue to strengthen the party nationwide as preparations intensify for the 2027 polls.
The convention ratified decisions of the National Executive Committee and elected members of the National Working Committee, following the party’s strong performance in the 2023 elections, where it won the Kano State governorship.
Also speaking, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf urged party leaders to promote unity and inclusiveness, warning that internal divisions could weaken the NNPP.
In his acceptance speech, re-elected National Chairman, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, said the party had drawn lessons from the last election and remained committed to internal democracy ahead of 2027.
