The Kebbi State Government has denied any involvement in the investigation and detention of former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The government said the petitions being investigated did not originate from Kebbi State and insisted it played no role in Malami’s ongoing ordeal.

Speaking on Sunday, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, Ahmed Idris, dismissed reports suggesting the case was politically motivated or linked to the state government.

“There is nothing like that. The Kebbi State Government has no hand in Malami’s issue; it predates this administration,” Idris said.

According to him, the petitions were filed when Malami declared interest in the Kebbi governorship and allegedly originated from Abuja, not Kebbi State.

Malami was invited by the EFCC on November 28 over issues related to the recovery of the Abacha loot during his tenure as Attorney General of the Federation. He said on November 29 that his interrogation was productive and described the allegations as “fabricated.”

However, he reportedly returned to the EFCC on December 8 and has remained in custody after failing to meet his bail conditions.

His detention followed his declaration of interest in the 2027 Kebbi governorship election, triggering speculation over political motives.

Idris maintained that the state government had no knowledge of the case details, describing claims linking it to the matter as “mischievous and unfounded.”
