Alexander Isak endured a mixed evening as Liverpool secured a dramatic 2-1 Premier League victory over nine-man Tottenham in north London on Saturday.

The Sweden striker put Liverpool ahead in the second half after Tottenham were reduced to 10 men before the interval, when Xavi Simons was sent off following a VAR review for a dangerous challenge on Virgil van Dijk.

It was only Isak’s third goal in 16 games since his £125m move from Newcastle, but the forward was forced off moments later after sustaining an injury in a clash with Micky van de Ven.

Liverpool doubled their lead through Hugo Ekitike, who scored his fifth goal in four games, before Richarlison pulled one back late to raise hopes of a comeback.

Tottenham’s problems worsened in stoppage time when Cristian Romero was sent off, leaving the hosts with nine players.

The win lifted Arne Slot’s side to fifth place and extended their unbeaten run to six games in all competitions.

However, Isak’s injury is a concern for Liverpool, especially with Mohamed Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

For Tottenham, the defeat compounds their struggles as they sit 13th in the table, having won just once in their last eight league matches, increasing pressure on manager Thomas Frank.
