The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Monday held a meeting in Abuja with leaders of the feuding factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in an effort to resolve the party’s protracted leadership crisis.
The meeting brought together the faction led by former minister Tanimu Turaki and a rival group headed by Abdulrahman Mohammed, which is aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Those present on Turaki’s side included members of his National Working Committee and former Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu. The Mohammed faction was represented by members of its National Caretaker Committee, including its secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.
The crisis dates back to November, when a PDP faction backed by some governors, including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, held a convention that produced a new National Working Committee, with Turaki emerging as national chairman.
Following the convention, the party announced the expulsion of Wike and several allies. The Wike-backed group rejected the move and subsequently constituted a parallel party structure, further deepening the internal crisis.
INEC did not immediately disclose details of the outcome of the meeting.
