Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Friday defended the collaboration between the National Assembly and the Executive in Nigeria’s 2026 budget process, rejecting claims that legislators have overly aligned with the presidency.

He spoke during the presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to a joint session of the National Assembly, describing cooperation as essential for national progress.

Akpabio stressed that working with the Executive is not a “sell-out” but a strategic move, citing historical examples such as the United States’ New Deal and post-war Britain’s reconstruction, where institutional cooperation drove recovery.

He warned that hostility between branches of government often leads to stagnation.
Highlighting the 10th National Assembly’s achievements, Akpabio cited key bills on security, economic reform, governance, and electoral integrity, which he said strengthen the legal framework for national renewal.

He urged Nigerians to support the partnership, emphasizing that unity and accountability are crucial for delivering budget priorities and improving governance.

President Tinubu’s 2026 budget, dubbed the “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity,” totals N58.18 trillion and focuses on macroeconomic stability, security, and job-rich growth, with the National Assembly pledging full legislative backing.
