Former Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, has criticised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), over what he described as poor preparation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), in Morocco.

Speaking on his ObiOne podcast, Mikel expressed disappointment with reports that the national team coach was owed salaries, describing the situation as embarrassing so close to the tournament.

“I’m not impressed at all with the preparation. After what happened in the World Cup qualifiers, you would expect things to be better,” he said.

Mikel questioned how such issues could persist at a crucial stage, warning that unresolved administrative problems could negatively affect the team.

“How do you owe a coach money at this stage? It’s shameful. This is not how serious football nations operate. When these things are in the public space, it affects the coach, the players and the fans,” he added.

Reports had claimed Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle, was owed three months’ salary and bonuses.

However, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, clarified that the commission had been paying Chelle’s salary on behalf of the NFF as part of its support.

Nigeria will compete in Group C of AFCON 2025 against Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania, with their opening match against Tanzania scheduled for December 23 in Fès.
