The Nigerian military has called for stronger collaboration with academic institutions, industry players, and other stakeholders to drive indigenous research and development in the defence sector.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, represented by Air Vice Marshal Idi Sani, made the call Tuesday in Abuja at the Fourth Quarter Defence Headquarters and Services Transformation Seminar.

Oluyede stressed that modern warfare, shaped by AI, robotics, space technologies, and autonomous platforms requires continuous innovation.

“To remain competitive, the Armed Forces must prioritise indigenous R&D, strengthen partnerships, and equip personnel with skills for future warfare,” he said.

He added that evolving threats-from terrorism to cyber warfare-make transformation an operational necessity, demanding agile, forward-looking, and technology-integrated forces.
