U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a new proclamation expanding travel restrictions, placing Nigeria and at least 15 other countries on a list facing partial or full entry limitations into the United States.
Under the updated policy, Nigeria, alongside countries such as Tanzania and Zambia, will be subject to restrictions affecting visa issuance and entry for certain categories of travellers.
The proclamation also imposes full entry bans on citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan and Syria, while restricting travel for holders of documents issued by the Palestinian Authority.
U.S. officials said the measures were taken over security concerns, including unreliable travel documentation, high visa overstay rates and limited cooperation on immigration enforcement.
The latest action builds on earlier expansions of the travel restrictions announced in mid-2025 and is expected to draw diplomatic reactions from affected countries.
Official responses from Nigeria and other nations were still awaited at press time.
