The Nigeria Police Force has placed all state commands and tactical units on high alert ahead of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) nationwide protest scheduled for Wednesday, December 17, 2025, with Lagos and Abuja identified as major flashpoints.
In a December 16, 2025 wireless message marked “M/IMMEDIATE,” the Force Headquarters directed Commissioners of Police to strengthen operational measures to manage the protest and prevent any breakdown of law and order.
Issued by the Department of Operations, the directive ordered all tactical units to remain on full standby for rapid response. Commands were also instructed to deploy officers to strategic locations, including government facilities, public utilities and critical infrastructure, while maintaining a visible presence to deter criminal activity.
The police further advised engagement with labour leaders, civil society groups and other stakeholders to ensure peaceful demonstrations.
While raising the security alert, the Force emphasised professionalism, strict adherence to rules of engagement and respect for human rights. Officers were also directed to remain in camouflage uniforms until further notice.
The planned protest comes amid growing public discontent over Nigeria’s economic conditions, with major demonstrations expected in Lagos and Abuja.
