Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the FIFA World Cup remain alive as FIFA investigates the eligibility of some players fielded by DR Congo in the African playoffs for the 2026 tournament.
The Super Eagles were eliminated by DR Congo on penalties in the final playoff for Africa’s intercontinental ticket.
However, the result is now under scrutiny following allegations that DR Congo used ineligible players.
Reports indicate that as many as nine DR Congo players may have switched nationality without completing the required legal and administrative processes under both Congolese law and FIFA regulations.
DR Congo does not recognise dual citizenship, meaning players who acquire another nationality are required to formally renounce their Congolese citizenship, particularly those who have passed the age limit for a final nationality switch.
FIFA rules also state that possession of a passport alone does not automatically make a player eligible to represent a country, as local legal requirements and FIFA nationality regulations must be fully satisfied.
Concerns have additionally been raised over the documentation of at least one player who reportedly declined an earlier international call-up.
FIFA is said to be reviewing the matter, with potential sanctions ranging from match forfeiture to other disciplinary measures, depending on the outcome of the investigation.
Although outright expulsion appears unlikely, the ongoing probe has cast doubt over DR Congo’s qualification, leaving Nigeria on standby pending FIFA’s final decision.
