WWE legend John Cena has retired from professional wrestling following his final bout at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C., bringing an end to a 24-year career.

The 48-year-old lost his farewell match to Gunther after submitting to a sleeper hold in a near 25-minute contest, a rare moment that stunned fans as Cena had never tapped out in his storied career.

After the match, fellow WWE stars entered the ring to honour him. Cena placed his wristbands and boots in the ring before saluting the crowd.

Cena retires as a record 17-time world champion and six-time WrestleMania headliner.

He debuted in 2002, rose to fame with his “Doctor of Thuganomics” persona and “You Can’t See Me” slogan, and later built a successful Hollywood career.

Reacting, Cody Rhodes said Cena “set such a high standard, such a high bar.”
