The Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Very Rev. Fr. Michael Banjo, has urged government and citizens to prioritise the protection of life, emphasising that every Nigerian life matters, whether Christian or Muslim.
Speaking at the CSN’s Christmas Carols event, Fr. Banjo highlighted the nation’s security challenges, including the recent abduction of 165 children and staff from a Catholic school in Kontagora.
He stressed that Nigeria cannot wait for external pressure to take insecurity seriously.
“Protecting life is the primary duty of government. Every Nigerian life matters regardless of whether he or she is a Christian or Muslim,” he said.
Fr. Banjo called for leaders of integrity and compassion, urging citizens to give glory to God through their choices, particularly in leadership selection.
He said genuine peace on earth begins with honouring God in personal conduct, public life, and governance.
Despite the country’s challenges, he encouraged “courageous joy” rooted in faith, citing examples of saints and religious leaders who maintained joy in the face of adversity.
He urged Nigerians to embrace gratitude, hope, and active engagement in building a peaceful and just nation.
The Secretary General’s message framed security, ethical leadership, and respect for life as foundational to national stability, reminding Nigerians that faith, courage, and collective responsibility remain essential for the country’s progress.
