Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has announced plans to dualise major roads in Onitsha, 3-3, Nkisi and Nkwelle-in a bid to address chronic traffic congestion in the commercial city.
Soludo disclosed this in a video circulated on Saturday, noting that commuters along the 3-3 and Nkwelle axes currently spend between four and five hours daily in traffic, a situation he described as unacceptable.
He said the project is part of his administration’s broader plan to build a “new Onitsha” through improved road infrastructure.
“We are going to unlock the 3-3 and Nkwelle axis. People are held in traffic for over five hours every day, and that is going to stop,” the governor said, adding that the dualisation would expand road capacity, improve traffic flow and stimulate economic activities.
The governor said he personally inspected the affected roads and surrounding areas to assess their condition and guide proper planning ahead of the project.
Construction work is expected to begin early next year.
Residents, traders and business owners welcomed the announcement, describing the roads as vital links within Onitsha that have suffered years of neglect and daily gridlock.
Soludo noted that the project aligns with the state’s plan to dualise all major Trunk A routes to enhance connectivity across communities.
He cited ongoing and completed projects, including the 68-kilometre Amawbia-Nise-Agulu-Nanka-Ekwulobia-Uga Road linking Anambra and Imo states.
The governor added that over 170 kilometres of roads, including federal roads, have already been dualised by the state, stressing that the investments are critical to Anambra’s growth and economic development.
