WWE legend John Cena has retired from professional wrestling following his final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C., bringing an end to a 24-year career.
The 48-year-old lost to Gunther after submitting to a sleeper hold in a nearly 25-minute bout, a rare moment that stunned fans as Cena had never tapped out in his career.
After the match, fellow WWE stars paid tribute as Cena left his wristbands and boots in the ring and saluted the crowd.
Cena retires as a record 17-time world champion and six-time WrestleMania headliner.
He debuted in 2002, rose to fame with his “Doctor of Thuganomics” persona and “You Can’t See Me” catchphrase, and later found success in Hollywood.
