The Lagos State Police Command has opened an investigation into a viral video showing a uniformed officer being beaten by a mob over an alleged theft.
The video, which surfaced on Wednesday, shows the officer sitting on the ground with blood streaming from his mouth as onlookers shout “Ole!” (thief). Details of the alleged offence remain unclear.
Another officer is seen attempting to push through the crowd to rescue his colleague.
The incident appears to have occurred in a busy Lagos area, with commercial buses and tricycles visible in the background, including a yellow bus marked “Ayedade.”
Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed the command is reviewing the footage.
“We are investigating to determine the full circumstances and confirm the identity of the officer. Updates will follow,” she said in a post on X.
The Force has repeatedly warned against mob justice. The probe comes days after 18 suspects were arrested in Plateau State over the mob killing of a police officer in Bassa LGA.
