Eight students of the University of Jos were killed early Thursday in a fatal crash involving a trailer and a bus on Zaria Road, opposite Unity Bank, Jos, Plateau State.
The bus, which had 11 male occupants, reportedly crashed while attempting a wrongful overtaking at high speed, causing the driver to lose control before colliding with an oncoming trailer.
Seven students died on the spot, while one later died in the hospital. Three others are receiving treatment.
FRSC Public Education Officer, Peter Longsan, confirmed the incident, saying the corps received a distress call at about 2:30 a.m. and arrived to find multiple casualties.
Sector Commander, Olajide Mogaji, cautioned motorists, especially commercial drivers against night travel, speeding, dangerous overtaking, and driving under fatigue, noting that such behaviours remain leading causes of fatal crashes.
He urged road users to report emergencies via the FRSC toll-free line, 122.
