The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has fixed December 17 for a nationwide protest over the worsening insecurity across the country.
The decision, announced in a communiqué after the NEC meeting in Lagos, was signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and Acting General Secretary Benson Upah.
The Congress said the recent abduction of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the killing of a school staff member reflect a dangerous collapse of security, condemning the reported withdrawal of security operatives from the school before the attack.
Calling the spike in school attacks “unacceptable,” the NLC urged the Federal Government to immediately secure all learning institutions, particularly those in high-risk communities.
The NEC also reviewed other national issues, including the crisis in tertiary education, the JOHESU strike, and the weakening ideological direction of the Labour Party.
It insisted those responsible for security lapses must be investigated and prosecuted.
The NLC said all affiliate unions will join the December 17 protest, warning that continued government inaction could spark broader industrial unrest.
It urged Nigerians to support the demand for a safer country and called on state governments and security agencies to strengthen protection for vulnerable communities.
