The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has declared a state of emergency across the region in response to recent coups, attempted mutinies, and political instability.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray during the 55th Session of the Mediation and Security Council in Abuja.

Touray said the surge in unrest highlights the urgent need for collective action to protect democratic governance.

“The situation demands serious introspection on the future of our democracy and investment in regional security,” he stated.

The bloc is stepping up mediation efforts and regional security measures to restore stability, working closely with member states.

Further details are expected as the meeting continues and resolutions are finalized.
