The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police Command says its operatives have killed three suspected kidnappers during a 30-minute gun battle in the Kwali area of Abuja.
In a statement on Monday, FCT Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh said the operation followed credible intelligence about a planned large-scale kidnapping attack scheduled for December 1.
A key suspect, Sani Mohammed Umar (a.k.a. Boko), was first arrested and allegedly confessed that his gang was waiting at Gada Biyu Hills to begin the operation.
When officers moved to the location, the suspects opened fire, leading to a shootout in which three were killed while others fled with injuries.
Recovered items include three AK-47 rifles, three magazines, and 33 rounds of live ammunition.
A joint police-military operation is ongoing to track the fleeing gang members, while hospitals have been advised to report anyone with gunshot wounds.
The Commissioner of Police praised the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for its swift response and urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely intelligence.
