The Senate will today begin a three-day national security summit in Abuja to tackle the rising insecurity across the country.
Sir Kenny Okolugbo of the Senate President’s media office said the summit will consolidate findings from earlier zonal security hearings held across all six geopolitical zones.
Traditional rulers also participated in the hearings, which he said highlighted the need to address insecurity “from the grassroots.”
Okolugbo noted that former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments on killings in Nigeria were not new, recalling that Senator Jimoh Ibrahim had raised similar concerns on the Senate floor in May 2025.
He criticised the tendency to prioritise foreign reactions over local efforts, stressing that both Christians and Muslims continue to suffer attacks.
He added that the issue is particularly sensitive because Senate President Godswill Akpabio is the highest-ranking Christian in the Tinubu administration.
After Senator Ibrahim’s motion, Akpabio reminded lawmakers that every fallen soldier leaves behind grieving families, just like the civilians lost to violence.
