The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has dismissed allegations that Xpress Payments has been granted exclusive rights in Nigeria’s revenue collection system, describing the claims as inaccurate and politically charged.
In a statement signed by Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, Technical Assistant on Broadcast Media to the FIRS Executive Chairman, the agency clarified that it operates a multi-channel payment system with platforms such as Quickteller, Remita, Etranzact, Flutterwave, and XpressPay. No private company holds monopoly over government revenues.
FIRS stressed that Payment Solution Service Providers (PSSPs), are not collection agents and do not earn fees from government funds.
All payments go directly into the Federation Account, ensuring transparency and accountability.
The multi-channel system, the agency said, promotes efficiency, competition, innovation, and job creation in Nigeria’s fintech sector.
The statement also highlighted ongoing national tax reforms led by the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, aimed at modernising the economy.
FIRS urged political actors and the public to avoid misrepresenting administrative processes for partisan purposes.
