Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Monday launched the National Counter-Terrorism Centre’s Strategic Plan 2025-2030, describing it as a major step toward modernising Nigeria’s security system and strengthening the fight against terrorism.

Unveiled in Abuja, the five-year plan aims to boost national resilience, deploy advanced security technology, and improve coordination among government, security agencies and communities.

Akpabio said insecurity has stalled development, disrupted education and discouraged investment, making the strategy both urgent and necessary.

He highlighted key priorities, including stronger early-warning systems, the use of modern tools such as drones and cybersecurity platforms, and deeper regional and international collaboration.

He also called for greater private-sector involvement and assured that the National Assembly would ensure strict oversight of implementation.

Representing the National Security Adviser, NCTC Coordinator Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka said the plan draws on two decades of counter-insurgency experience and addresses drivers of violent extremism such as unemployment and drug abuse.

He cited initiatives like the Seeds of Hope rehabilitation programme as part of efforts to improve intelligence, operations and national resilience.

The African Union Commission’s Dr. Usman Hussain praised Nigeria’s leadership and announced upcoming AU technical missions to support implementation. Development partners, diplomats and security chiefs also pledged support.

The event ended with the formal unveiling of the Strategic Plan 2025-2030, signalling a renewed push in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.
