The Senate has been thrown into mourning following the death of Senator Okey Ezea, who represented Enugu North Senatorial District.

The Labour Party lawmaker reportedly died in the United Kingdom while receiving medical treatment.

Ezea’s passing marks the second death of a serving South-East senator in two years, following Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of Anambra State, who died in London in July 2024.

Tributes poured in from colleagues, who described Ezea as humble, principled and prayerful.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu said he received the news with “profound shock and deep sorrow,” describing Ezea as “a dear brother and colleague.”

He extended condolences to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Governor Peter Mbah, the Nsukka community, and the bereaved family.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan praised him as “wise and gentle,” saying she would miss his supportive prayers and calm presence in the chamber.

The Senate is expected to formally announce his death at plenary, with lawmakers likely to observe a minute of silence in his honour.
