Tension erupted at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), national headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday as rival factions attempted to hold parallel meetings, triggering gunshots and teargas by security operatives.
The crisis broke out when the National Working Committee elected in Ibadan and the faction loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike fixed meetings for the same day.
Samuel Anyanwu, secretary of the pro-Wike camp, arrived early with his group and occupied his office.
Moments later, the Tanimu Turaki faction arrived but was denied entry. Despite tight security, two governors reportedly pushed their way into the premises.
As more members of the Turaki group attempted to enter, security personnel fired warning shots and released teargas, causing chaos around Wadata Plaza as people fled for safety.
Before the clash, Anyanwu told journalists the heavy security presence was only to maintain order, insisting his faction was prepared for both the BoT and NEC meetings.
Security operatives remain on high alert around the secretariat as the PDP leadership moves to address the escalating internal conflict.
