The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), has effectively ended identity theft and multiple voting in Nigerian elections.
INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan, SAN, represented by National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu at the 2025 Digital Nigeria International Conference in Abuja, called BVAS a “foolproof mechanism” that ensures only eligible voters are accredited.
Data from the recent Anambra governorship election showed over 99% of results were uploaded in real time via BVAS to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV), portal.
Amupitan noted that the Electoral Act 2022 now gives legal backing to digital accreditation, strengthening transparency and public trust.
While connectivity challenges persist in some remote polling units, he insisted that digital systems have delivered irreversible gains and rejected any return to manual processes.
Nigeria’s move to technology-driven elections addresses past issues of impersonation, ballot stuffing, and opaque result collation, cementing BVAS and IReV as core tools in the electoral process.
