Star African forwards Victor Osimhen of Nigeria and Bryan Mbeumo of Cameroon headline the African play-offs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but only one can advance.
Nigeria face Gabon, while Cameroon meet the Democratic Republic of Congo on Thursday in Rabat, Morocco, with winners to clash on Sunday for a spot in the intercontinental play-offs next March.
Nigeria and Cameroon are favourites to progress as they battle for Africa’s 10th qualification slot for the expanded 48-team World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Osimhen, who scored a hat-trick in Nigeria’s 4-0 win over Benin to secure qualification as one of the best runners-up, remains in fine form, also netting three goals for Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League. “I love Victor.
He is the best striker in the world,” said Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle.
Despite Nigeria’s pedigree, Gabon remain confident, with Denis Bouanga and veteran Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leading their attack.
In the other fixture, Cameroon’s Mbeumo, fresh from four goals in his last four matches for Manchester United, is expected to inspire the Indomitable Lions.
Cameroon, Africa’s record World Cup participants with eight appearances, will face a resilient DR Congo side missing injured winger Yoane Wissa.
