The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Federal Government of Nigeria have launched a regional initiative to boost the animal feed industry and strengthen food security across West Africa.

Unveiled in Abuja during the Research and Innovation Project on Productive, Resilient, and Healthy Agropastoral Systems in West Africa (PRISMA) meeting, the partnership seeks to tackle feed shortages, high costs, and poor quality affecting livestock production.

ECOWAS officials highlighted the livestock sector’s importance to regional economies but noted persistent challenges such as limited access to affordable feed. Nigeria’s Ministry of Livestock Development reaffirmed its commitment through the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NLGAS) 2025–2035, which aligns with ECOWAS’ regional goals.

The initiative, supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), aims to encourage investment, standardize feed quality, and promote digital tools for distribution across member states.
