Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), President, Joe Ajaero, has called for the inclusion of private universities in the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), saying their exclusion creates inequality in the tertiary education system.
Ajaero noted that private universities remain unaffected by frequent strikes in public institutions because they are outside ASUU’s structure, weakening collective bargaining and the push for better working conditions.
He said the divide has created a two-tier system, one for the privileged and another for the less privileged, describing it as unjust and contrary to equal access to education.
While his call raises questions about the legal framework governing private institutions, Ajaero maintained that including their lecturers in ASUU would strengthen solidarity and improve education across all universities.
