Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hailed former captain Granit Xhaka, saying the Swiss midfielder made him “a better coach” as the Gunners prepare to face Sunderland on Saturday.
Xhaka, 33, returned to the Premier League in July to join newly promoted Sunderland after two years at Bayer Leverkusen.
He previously spent seven years at Arsenal, where Arteta rebuilt his confidence after a fallout with fans in 2019.
“I loved every minute we spent together,” Arteta said on Friday. “He made me a better coach and helped us grow as a team. I’ll always be grateful.”
Arteta also praised Sunderland’s progress and Xhaka’s strong influence, noting the club’s “impressive management and stability.”
Arsenal, six points clear of Manchester City, have won 10 straight matches in all competitions but Arteta insists the title race remains open.
“We know our strengths and where we must improve,” he added.
