The European Union (EU), has reaffirmed its respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and pledged continued partnership in promoting peace, interfaith dialogue, and human rights.

EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, stated this in Lagos during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), stressing that the bloc’s cooperation with Nigeria is based on mutual respect and shared values, not external influence.

“Our position is one of solidarity with Nigeria-solidarity with victims of violence, with authorities working to protect citizens, and with the Nigerian people who desire peaceful coexistence,” Mignot said.

He noted that the EU remains committed to supporting peacebuilding initiatives, human rights, and freedom of religion through collaboration with government institutions, civil society, and traditional and religious leaders.

The envoy disclosed that a Nigeria-EU dialogue on peace, security, and defence will hold soon to deepen strategic cooperation.

Mignot emphasised that the EU’s support is guided by Nigeria’s constitutional principles and the belief that the nation’s stability and prosperity “lie firmly in the hands of Nigerians themselves.”
